tea fire

With the 3 forest fires we have had in the Santa Barbara area in the last 18 months this community has certainly had a strain put on it. The adversity that families, people, and businesses are having to over come are incredible.

First there was the Zaca fire which was the 2nd largest fire in California's history. This fire burned more than 240,000 acres of some of the most beautiful country in the world. The pine forests that were once there are now replaced with something eerily like the moon. I know that the forests will rise again and this beautiful wilderness will once again be a place where the beauty of nature is abundant.

The Gap fire started on the ridge above the town of Goleta, and in a matter of hours was burning very close to the homes in the city of Goleta. This fire burned over 9,500 acres and burned 4 outbuildings and cost 20 million to put out. Yesterday we were informed that a 16 year old had been arrested and charged with arson in this case. How could someone actually want to start something this devastating?

The Tea fireis the most recent fire disaster to hit our fair city and it may have been the most impactful since it destroyed 210 homes and many of the personal items that went with them. I am one of the lucky ones who didn't personally have to wrestle with deciding on what to take from my home in a matter of minutes, or evacuate my horses, or contemplate trying to save my home with a garden hose, but many people did.

I have a number of friends who it would appear aren't as lucky as I. Then I began to wonder and contemplate one specific family that we are friends with who just lost their home only 2.5 years after losing their 15 year old daughter to brain cancer. Did I mention the mother battled breast cancer last year and is now cancer free.

To speak with them you wouldn't have one clue that they feel sorry for themselves or are bitter about anything that has happened in their lives. They have never asked for help, but when someone else is in need they are at the front of the line willing to do whatever might be asked of them. They show up at church and are a light for all of us. My oldest son, I am proud to say is friends with their now only child. Wow, what that 13 year old could teach all of us about over coming adversity. (I had a lump in my throat while writing that last sentence)

I am 100% confident that this family is living their lives to be one of the most shining examples to all of us as to what being founded in your faith can mean. So, what does come from adversity? I think this family has moments when they wonder, but I also know that they are one of the closest most loving families I have ever had the pleasure of being around. Could it possibly be, much of their love for life and their fellow human beings has come out of the adversity they have experienced?

How do you handle adversity? Is a little ole economic crisis getting the best of you or are you embracing it and making the best you can out of every day? I know one thing, when I begin to have a little bit of a pity party I think of my friends and what they have been dealt and it inspires me to be better and do better at every moment of every day. I hope you have something like that in your life.

I always wonder why people keep buying homes in areas that are known to be in a "high risk" area? I have heard of people whose homes have been burnt to the ground not just once but twice--why would you put yourself through the emotional pain of losing your home!  I am just thinking out loud.

I think the fires are a great travesty. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to everyone. And hopefully the real state market won't suffer any more than it already has.

WOW! I have family in Malibu and know all too well the impact the fires in Southern California have on the communities. I hope you and your family stay safe, Greg! As for those you described here, adversity does strengthen many things -- most of all... faith!

Aida, I have some of my best moments when I think out loud. ;o) This really is a beautiful area to own a home, ocean views, mountain views, it's very peaceful. People fall in love with it.

Angelena, I share your feelings. I lived through a fire called the painted cave fire and hundreds of homes were burned then. Rebuilding certainly put lots of people back to work. I'm sure this will be the case again.

Melissa , Malibu has had it's share of fires. My family and I are safe, and I appreciate your thoughts and concern. Keep the FAITH!

Greg - Adversity brings out the angels or devils in us all.  I feel for those who have experienced such tragedy.  Keep safe, my friend.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and stories with us Greg, stay safe, and God bless you!

Greg,

What an inspirational family..  The fires are a tragedy.

Thank you for sharing,

Ann

Jason, don't you know it brother. All is good!

Lou, thanks and God Bless!

Ann, they are a remarkable family, and thanks for commenting!

What a wonderful reflection. Times like these really help everyone put things back into perspective, don't they? There isn't a day that goes by that I am not grateful for where I am, at every moment, in each of them. I had an elderly neighbor ask me today--if you lost everything, honestly, could you go on? And my answer was yes, as long as I wasn't totally, utterly alone in my life, I know that my friends, family, even people like you would share thoughts, support and aid where needed and that truth is what helps me stay positive. God Bless to all of you up there. We in the community are here for you when  you need it most!

Wow what a mind boggling quantification of the fires, it is truly hard to imagine just how large the areas that have been damaged, much less the homes and belongings. And it is inspiring to read the account of your neighbors overcoming so much and still being positive and strong. I am wishing them the best, and you as well. Take care.

Great perspective! I am so grateful everyday for the things I have. One of the greatest things we have are our family and friends.

It is such a shame people have to endure this.  Thank you for sharing.  In Texas we worry about tornadoes and may forget just how blessed we are.

This is the time of year when we're reminded 'in all things, give thanks.' The family you mentioned is a living example of that. We may not always understand, but we have to believe there's a greater reason for what we endure.

I think the best way to face adversity is to spend time in the service of others.  The more we focus on our own problems, health issues, financial situations, or whatever the case may be, the more fear and loss we will feel.  If we choose instead to reach out to others, and focus on them, our pain becomes secondary.  Much easier said than done, but true nonetheless.

Greg-what a poignant reminder to count your blessings.  I have to agree that reaching out in times of trouble is much more healing than turning inward in pain, but it's hard to do at times and this family's experiences and attitude are uplifting! Thank you for sharing.

Adversity is where you'll find the true character of a person.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by these fires!

I've been watching the news coverage on the fires.   The news hasn't covered as much lately so I'm hoping things are improving?

Hi Greg,

This post certainly put things into perspective - thank you.

I stumbled upon a great quote from Malcolm Gladwell, the author of The Tipping Point, on CNN.com last week, "success is a product of unusual opportunity."

We are certainly in an unusual opportunity.

great story -- thanks for sharing -- JE

Greg,  Thanks for yet another reminder of what's really important in our lives.

Adversity can make one grow much stronger, but its really sad that they had to lose their homes....

I too agree with why would you keep building there.  That would be too much for me to deal with.  I am so busy with running a business, that how would I ever keep it together if all of my stuff was gone.  Not to mention nobody is buying house or insurance in my case when the whole community is on fire.  However I do feel bad for what they are going through, hope everyone is well out there.

it is amazing the resiliency of people, whether its california wild fires, people in New Orleans or survivors of florida's often hurricanes

Greg - I feel so bad for the people who lost  their homes in the recent fires in southern California. I just saw on the news the Lakers donated money to the Red Cross to help out the victims as well.

Well, it was nice this morning to wake up to a featured post. They never start out that way, but thanks!

Ed, thanks for the high praise! Say hi to my friend Pam Strauss for me.

Maggie, Thanks for the well wishes. Things are getting better. Time is a great healer.

Jubal, you said it! Give em all hugs for me. ;o)

Melody, mother nature is not to be underestimated. We all need to be careful.

John, you are right, and Thanksgiving this year will be time to do just that.

Kelly, that is great advice. This time of year opportunities to give are everywhere.

Cat, my pleasure, I just couldn't keep their inspiration all to myself. ;o)

Richard, true stuff, and keep the prayers coming! Thanks!

Diane, they are and now they suspect it was started by a bonfire that reignited.

Mark, I actually read his book. Good stuff, thanks for the quote and comment.

Jason, thanks, and thanks for spending time to comment.

Marian, sometimes I forget to remember as well. The days are filled with things that keep me from focusing on important stuff.

Sonja, adversity is certainly the kind of thing that can be life changing.

Jason F., I know many folks are thinking the same thing. You might look at it differently if you were a contractor. ;o)

James, it is, and when it hits home you can really relate.

Sharon, there are many organizations coming to help. It is very heartwarming.

Knowles,

Okay, so cross off "lack of confidence" from your list of reasons NOT to write. An exceptional blog that presented news, humanity and hope in a succinct, well-written effort.

Math major my eye ;)

Adversity, challenges, struggles, while hard to go through, do teach us what we are made of.  And what really matters.  I have been through some excruciating challenges the past few years, and I recognize that I am so much stronger now for the experiences.  In the spirit of thanksgiving, the other day I was writing out all that I had to be thankful for.  It hit me at the end that I had not listed one single material thing that money could buy.  I wonder, would that have been the case had I not learned the hard way what really matters in this life?

MR. LENZA! I am happy to say I have the book you sent me next to my computer here at the office. You made my day by stopping by and commenting. I hope all is terrific in your world.

Janna, I am glad to have the same perspective you do. Family, Friends, Faith are what float my boat.

Greg: Thank you for the post it put a lump in my throat too. We all need this reminder that life is so very precious and to be lived one day at a time. Thank You

Kelly, I'm glad you appreciate the post. I am feeling just like you said. One day at a time.

Congratulations on having your post featured!  I sure wish I knew why it disappeared from my site after I reblogged it....
